1. Domain insurance in case of theft

The first is the domain insurance itself, in case of its theft, which in the terms and conditions is referred to as technical theft of the domain (the unauthorized removal of access to the domain from its rightful holder). The amount of the insurance payout depends on the service variant. We currently offer the Assurance variant with a payout of CZK 1,000,000 and the Assurance EXTRA variant with a payout of CZK 3,000,000.

2. IT assistance services

IT assistance services are here mainly as a quick consultation. This is the standard offering of IT assistance services for Slavia pojišťovna’s products, expanded to include domains. Assistance services are included in both variants (Assurance and Assurance EXTRA).

IT assistance services can help you with, for example:

The procedure in case of domain theft, checking documentation, and consultation with the registrar.
Fraud prevention during domain transfer.
Locking the domain.
Matters concerning owner emails and authorization of changes to the domain.
Expiration of ownership and domain renewal.
Theft of an online account.

3. Legal assistance services

Every successful website will sooner or later encounter an attempt to misuse its brand (domain). The solution isn’t always easy, but a letter written by a lawyer will convince many cyber crooks to find an easier victim. Slavia pojišťovna has included legal assistance services with the Assurance EXTRA product.

We have to admit that they’ve really thoroughly studied the situation around domains. These are problems that we regularly have to deal with alongside our customers.

How domain insurance works

Domain insurance is ordered as an add-on service to your domain. However, you don’t pay us for it (this is due to strict CNB regulations). After completing the domain registration, you’ll receive an email with instructions, which also includes a link to arrange it with our partner POJISTENI.cz.

Domain insurance is arranged immediately after payment and takes effect right away. The insurance remains valid as long as you have your domain with WEDOS (we are the registrar) and the owner (holder) does not change.

Assistance services are provided on business days from 9:00 to 19:00, based on a telephone request from the insured person. You can find the current phone number to call at www.pojisteni.cz/domeny.

In the event of domain theft, Slavia pojišťovna will pay out the insurance benefit if the domain is not returned within 30 days, or within 180 days for countries
outside the EU.

Which domain extensions can I insure with you?

Currently, you can only insure a .cz domain with us.

What should I do if my domain is stolen?

The ideal approach is to contact us first (the domain registrar) via online chat. Our colleagues will verify the technical status of the domain. They will also check the WHOIS record directly and review the current details. On our end, we can also gather and prepare the necessary evidence (logs).
If you suspect that a crime has been committed (your domain was stolen), you need to contact the Czech Police.
You should also contact the assistance line (you can find the current number at www.pojisteni.cz/domeny) and try to cooperate as fully as possible.

How exactly is domain theft defined?

You’ll always find the exact definition in the contract. The insurer defines domain theft as technical theft of the domain, which is the unauthorized removal of access to the domain from its rightful holder.
The insurer will pay out the insurance benefit if the domain is not returned to the insured party by the registrar within 30 days of reporting the insurance claim. If the domain is returned from a country outside the EU, this period is extended to 180 days.

Who guarantees that the money will actually be paid out?

As long as the contractual terms are met, Slavia pojišťovna is legally obligated to pay out the insurance benefit. It is a large and well-known insurance company with billions in turnover, supervised by the CNB.

The domain holder doesn’t have a registered address in Czechia — can the domain be insured somehow?

Only domains registered to individuals/companies with a registered address in Czechia can be insured.

The terms (Article 10, 3.d) list a number of complicated measures I need to carry out. Are they mandatory?

The contractual terms, in Article 10 (Exclusions from Insurance), point 3.d), contain the following text:

3. The insurance also does not cover damages arising:
d) in cases where the insured party does not carry out appropriate measures (e.g. verification of details by email and SMS, locking the domain, verification via MojeID, blocking registrar changes) or carries them out inadequately, or fails to provide the necessary cooperation to the competent state authority in direct or indirect connection with the insured event,

Insurance companies have to give some examples of how a domain should be secured. This is a list of security measures the insurer will ask about if a claim event occurs.
If we were to draw a parallel with cars, the contract would say something like: “The client must have appropriate anti-theft protection on the vehicle (e.g. mechanical locks, alarm, passive tracking, active tracking, window etching.)” If there were no protection at all, the insurer could propose a reduced payout, simply because it wasn’t carried out adequately.
You should definitely keep your domain well secured. Make sure your phone number and email are up to date. Domains can also be locked against changes, which is another obstacle for an attacker.

Who provides support for the Domain Insurance service?

If you need advice or help with the product, please use POJISTENI.cz support. All contracts go through them, and they also handle orders, billing, etc. They’ll also answer any other questions you might have about the product.

Will I really get CZK 1 million for a stolen domain?

If an insured event occurs, the value of the domain will be assessed. This may or may not include the domain’s content. It’s the same as when your bike is stolen and you have it insured for CZK 100,000, but you’d already been riding it, or it was old. That’s simply how conventional insurance works.
You can’t assume that if you’re insured for a million and you lose the domain, you’ll automatically get a million crowns. In theory, you could get it, if you provide documentation showing the domain is worth that much. There are already clear rules for this (e.g. e-shop turnover over a certain period, etc.). It’s fair. A newly registered, meaningless domain made up of twenty random letters, with no content, simply won’t be worth a million crowns.
