How much does a domain cost?

Price sells, but the terms decide.

When choosing a domain for a website, the first question that usually comes up is: How much does a domain actually cost? The answer isn’t straightforward; it depends on the type of domain, the registrar, and also the renewal terms. Prices vary from registrar to registrar, but it’s wise to choose a reliable registrar, for example VEDOS.

Registration price: from a few crowns to thousands

Domain prices vary depending on the extension (e.g. .cz, .com, .shop, .online, etc.) and on where you register it. Some domains can be obtained for as little as a few dozen crowns per year, while others can cost hundreds to thousands of crowns.

For example:

.CZ Domain

The price of a .CZ domain usually ranges from CZK 150 to CZK 250 for the 1st year. Some registrars offer a promotional discounted price for the .CZ domain, but the subsequent renewal is then charged at a substantially higher price. At VEDOS, you buy it for CZK 160 per year. The subsequent renewal then costs you the same amount.

.COM Domain

You can register this popular generic domain for CZK 250 to CZK 400 per year. VEDOS offers it for CZK 342 per year.

New domains such as .TECH, .STORE, .SITE

Registration of these domains starts at CZK 20. With VEDOS, you can register a domain from CZK 14 for the 1st year.
Renewal of these domains can cost up to thousands of crowns per year.

First year vs. renewal: the key difference

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is watching only the registration price and forgetting to check the renewal price. And that’s exactly what’s key.

A real-world example:

– Registering a .online domain for CZK 20 as a promotion
– Renewal price: CZK 1,200 / year

A domain isn’t bought – only registered

One thing many people don’t realize: a domain is never bought permanently. It’s always only a rental for a certain period, usually for 1 year. However, it can be renewed for several years in advance if the registrar allows it. With VEDOS, you can register a domain for up to 10 years.

This means:

– If you stop paying for the domain, you can lose it.
– The domain may then be blocked, or someone else may buy it.

Securing a domain with DNSSEC

Another important element that you shouldn’t overlook when registering is securing the domain with DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions). This technology protects your website’s visitors from DNS record spoofing, i.e., from a situation where they could end up on a fake page even though they entered the correct address.

DNSSEC ensures that responses to DNS queries have not been altered along the way. If DNSSEC is not active and an attacker manages to spoof the DNS server’s response, visitors can be redirected elsewhere, for example to a phishing page.
With most quality registrars, DNSSEC is either free or very simple to activate. For .cz domains, DNSSEC is highly recommended and supported across the Czech internet.

At VEDOS, DNSSEC is a given, but there are certain rules involved; you can read more here.
